Why did I choose Tulum?

Why did I choose Tulum?

After living in approximately 22 cities across 8 countries, I chose to stay in Tulum in 2025 not because it’s “trendy.” I’ve never moved somewhere for that reason. Quite the opposite. After many years in large metropolitan cities, I needed a pause from crowds, packed elevators, endless traffic, impossible parking, and the constant sound of ambulances.

Tulum felt like a place worth testing. It’s geographically close to both of my homes, the United States and Colombia. Mexico is a beautiful country with a rich culture I deeply respect, and I genuinely love Mexican food. I’m still discovering the depth of its agriculture and local ingredients, which has been an inspiring experience in itself.

I’ve lived in the Caribbean since 2015, spending time in the Dominican Republic, Stuart Florida, and Miami. I’ve always felt connected to this region, so staying on the Caribbean side of Mexico in Quintana Roo felt natural rather than impulsive.

One interesting detail about Tulum is the strong Argentine presence. You’ll find charming Argentine cafés everywhere, often playing Argentine rock all day. It adds a distinct cultural layer to the town that you don’t expect at first.

Tulum has gone through intense scrutiny and criticism recently. While some people claim it was “cancelled,” what I see instead is a place in transition. Like many destinations that grow quickly, it’s adjusting, recalibrating, and redefining itself. For me, this moment makes Tulum more interesting, not less.

I didn’t come here looking for perfection. I came looking for space, balance, and a slower rhythm, and for now, Tulum is giving me exactly that.
